About Us

Our department has over 170 beds, provides outpatient services to more than 250,000 patients annually, performs nearly 12,000 surgeries per year, and generates over 600 million views on public health education content annually. The East and West Campuses each house three subspecialties: Joint Surgery, Sports Medicine, and Trauma; while the South Campus houses four subspecialties: Joint Surgery, Sports Medicine, Spine Surgery, and Trauma. The department’s techniques—including total hip and knee replacement, robotic surgery, hip and knee preservation, arthroscopic minimally invasive treatment, minimally invasive treatment of spinal disorders, and management of complex fractures and trauma—have all reached international standards.
The department boasts two nationally recognized talents, one national-level young talent, three chief scientists of the “National Key Research and Development Program,” one chief scientist of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology’s “Challenge-Based Project,” five doctoral advisors, seven master’s advisors, and 32 chief and associate chief physicians. It is an authorized program for conferring master’s, doctoral, and postdoctoral degrees at the School of Medicine, Shanghai Jiao Tong University. In recent years, department members have led more than 50 research projects, including the National Key Research and Development Program, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology’s “Challenge-Based” projects, sub-projects under the National 863 Program, National Natural Science Foundation projects, key projects of the Shanghai Municipal Science and Technology Commission, major research projects of the Shanghai Municipal Health and Family Planning Commission, and projects under the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission’s “Peak and Plateau” Discipline Development Program, with total research funding exceeding 100 million yuan. The department has achieved significant research outcomes in joint surgery and sports trauma-related technologies and fields. It has published over 260 papers in authoritative international and domestic academic journals, including more than 200 SCI-indexed papers, and has authored over 50 orthopedic textbooks and monographs. Department members have applied for and obtained more than 80 patents, and have repeatedly received awards such as the “Second Prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award,” “First Prize for Outstanding Achievements in Scientific Research from the Ministry of Education,” “Shanghai Science and Technology Progress Award,” the “Shanghai Medical Science and Technology Award,” the “Shanghai Medical Achievement Award,” and the “Second Prize of the Chinese Medical Science and Technology Award.”

Xu Ruida, Deputy Chief Physician, Doctor of Orthopedics, Expert in Orthopedics and Spinal Surgery at Renji Hospital (South Campus) Affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, Executive Deputy Director of Orthopedics and Joint Department, has been deeply involved in clinical, scientific research and teaching work of spinal degenerative diseases for more than 20 years. He currently holds multiple academic positions, including member of the Minimally Invasive Group of the Spinal Cord Professional Committee of the Shanghai Rehabilitation Medicine Association, and has won honors such as the Excellence Award in the first China Physician Spinal Endoscopy Skills Competition and the "Xinglin Expert" of the hospital. Hosted and participated in multiple scientific research projects, obtained one utility model patent, and published multiple papers in core journals such as ACS Nano at home and abroad. From 2009 to 2010, I went to the French hospital system to study European spinal surgery techniques. Currently, I have completed over 400 spinal surgeries annually, with a cumulative endoscopic surgery rate of over a thousand cases. The incidence of complications is less than 1.5%, and over 90% of lumbar spine surgeries have achieved daytime management. Specializing in minimally invasive diagnosis and treatment of lumbar spine diseases, proficient in spinal endoscopic lateral approach technology, targeting lumbar spinal stenosis, intervertebral disc herniation, etc., the surgery is completed with 1-2 1cm small incisions, and the postoperative recovery is fast; Participated in the first batch of endoscopic cervical spine surgery in China, specializing in the treatment of cervical spondylosis, ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament, etc. The patient can be discharged on the same day of surgery and has an average hospital stay of less than 4 days; Develop personalized tiered treatment plans for complex diseases such as osteoporotic vertebral fractures and spinal deformities in the elderly, integrating the advantages of minimally invasive and open surgery.

Published multiple SCI papers as the first or corresponding author, the research results have been cited by 6 international clinical guidelines or expert consensus, received multiple international journal highlights and high praise, and have been cited or positively recommended by 11 authoritative works in the field. 14 national invention patents have been authorized for the design of innovative orthopedic surgical instruments. Received honors such as the Shanghai Health System Silver Snake Award and the Shanghai Youth May Fourth Medal, and was selected for the top 2% of global scientists. Serving as a standing committee member of the Medical Metals Branch of the Chinese Society for Biomaterials and an editorial board member of Bioact Mater.
