Our department has over 170 beds, provides outpatient services to more than 250,000 patients annually, performs nearly 12,000 surgeries per year, and generates over 600 million views on public health education content annually. The East and West Campuses each house three subspecialties: Joint Surgery, Sports Medicine, and Trauma; while the South Campus houses four subspecialties: Joint Surgery, Sports Medicine, Spine Surgery, and Trauma. The department’s techniques—including total hip and knee replacement, robotic surgery, hip and knee preservation, arthroscopic minimally invasive treatment, minimally invasive treatment of spinal disorders, and management of complex fractures and trauma—have all reached international standards.
The department boasts two nationally recognized talents, one national-level young talent, three chief scientists of the “National Key Research and Development Program,” one chief scientist of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology’s “Challenge-Based Project,” five doctoral advisors, seven master’s advisors, and 32 chief and associate chief physicians. It is an authorized program for conferring master’s, doctoral, and postdoctoral degrees at the School of Medicine, Shanghai Jiao Tong University. In recent years, department members have led more than 50 research projects, including the National Key Research and Development Program, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology’s “Challenge-Based” projects, sub-projects under the National 863 Program, National Natural Science Foundation projects, key projects of the Shanghai Municipal Science and Technology Commission, major research projects of the Shanghai Municipal Health and Family Planning Commission, and projects under the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission’s “Peak and Plateau” Discipline Development Program, with total research funding exceeding 100 million yuan. The department has achieved significant research outcomes in joint surgery and sports trauma-related technologies and fields. It has published over 260 papers in authoritative international and domestic academic journals, including more than 200 SCI-indexed papers, and has authored over 50 orthopedic textbooks and monographs. Department members have applied for and obtained more than 80 patents, and have repeatedly received awards such as the “Second Prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award,” “First Prize for Outstanding Achievements in Scientific Research from the Ministry of Education,” “Shanghai Science and Technology Progress Award,” the “Shanghai Medical Science and Technology Award,” the “Shanghai Medical Achievement Award,” and the “Second Prize of the Chinese Medical Science and Technology Award.”
Members of the department have served as executive committee members and national committee members of the Sports Medicine Branch of the Chinese Medical Association; national committee members of the Sports Medicine Physicians Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctors Association; national committee members of the Orthopedics Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctors Association; national committee members of the Joint Surgery Working Group and the Arthroscopy Working Group of the Orthopedics Branch of the Chinese Medical Association; and Vice Chair of the Geriatric Bone and Joint Diseases Branch of the Chinese Geriatric Health Care Medical Research Association; Vice Chair of the Chinese Society of Knee Surgery; Vice Chair of the Chinese Branch of the International Society for Cartilage Repair; Standing Committee Member of the Medical Metals Branch of the Chinese Society for Biomaterials; Chair of the Sports Medicine Branch of the Shanghai Medical Association; Vice Chair of the Sports Medicine Branch of the Shanghai Medical Association; Vice Chair of the Hand Surgery Branch of the Shanghai Medical Association; Chair of the Clinical Innovation and Translation Committee for Joint Surgery of the Shanghai Society of Research Hospitals; President of the Shanghai Society of Rehabilitation Engineering, Vice President of the Sports Medicine Branch of the Shanghai Medical Association, and Vice Chair of the Joint Disease Branch of the Shanghai Society of Integrated Traditional and Western Medicine.
